What To Do with Old License Plates In Minnesota?

Trying to figure out what you need to do with your old license plates in Minnesota? Whether you are living in Saint Paul, Minneapolis, Rochester, Duluth, Brooklyn Park, Mankato, Albert Lea, Bloomington, Moorhead, Alexandria, St. Cloud, Eagan, Edina or wherever else you might be, your license plates won't need to be surrendered.

1.) You can send your old plates back to the dMV

In the State of Minnesota. You do NOT need to surrender your old license plates. If you'd like to make sure they make it back to the DMV for recycling, you can mail it in or drop off your plates at your local DMV office.

2.) Try selling your plates online

  • You could have some valuable license plates, especially if they are vintage or collector's editions.
  • You can find out how much your old plates are worth on websites like eBaycraigslist, or Facebook Marketplace.
  • Visit a consignment shop if you'd like someone else to sell your plates.

3.) Recycle Your Plates at a recycling center

  • Contact your curbside recycling to see if they accept license plates.
  • Most metal recycling centers will accept aluminum license plates. Make sure you chop up your license plates and remove any tags or screws.
