That’s right; it’s time to have a green Independence Day! You can still celebrate red, white and blue in style, but what if you knew how important it was to live as eco-friendly as possible, especially on the holidays? The United States produces 70 percent of the world’s solid waste and 80 percent of the products used in the United States are used once and then thrown away. You can add a little green to July 4, a day filled with red, white and blue, with just a few of our eco-friendly tips.
July is National Sarcoma Awareness Month, and because sarcoma is so common in childhood, it is important to know the signs and symptoms. Thankfully, Make-A-Wish helps to grant the wishes of children with sarcoma and other medical conditions so that children and their families can partake in a life-changing event to bring them hope and strength once again.
If you would like to play a part in helping to grant a wish for a child with sarcoma this July during National Sarcoma Awareness Month, consider a car donation to Wheels For Wishes, benefiting Make-A-Wish.
Join the 20th Annual Target Corporation Charity Golf Tournament on Aug. 1 in Bismarck to help grant wishes for North Dakota kids facing critical illnesses. Golfers have a choice of going to the Prairie West Golf Course or the Hawktree Golf Course to participate in this event. Last year Make-A-Wish North Dakota granted 39 wishes. You can help them continue to bring hope, strength, and joy to Wish Kids this year by attending this great event!
Whenever we turn on the news, we hear all different types of sad and negative news stories. At Wheels For Wishes, we help to make children’s wishes come true through our car donation program, benefiting Make-A-Wish. However, we also like to put a smile on the faces of our supporters, which is why we like to share those positives news stories with you that may have slipped through the cracks!

The American flag is one of the most recognizable symbols of our freedom. June 14 is a day that’s set aside just for our flag and for reflecting on what it represents. America has had an official flag since 1777, but it’s gone through many changes since then. The one thing that hasn’t changed, though, is that our flag represents our national pride and freedom. Because Flag Day falls on a Saturday this year, we’ve compiled a list of children’s books all about our flag and our country that you can read together as a family once the day’s activities wind down.
For many people, the decision to make a donation to a charitable cause is an easy one. If you don’t have enough extra income to make charitable contributions, however, there is still a simple way that you can make a significant contribution to Make-A-Wish. If you’ve got a car that no longer runs or if it’s time to upgrade to a better vehicle, donating your old car can be an easy decision.
There are many options for people when it comes to replacing an old vehicle. Selling it yourself or trading it in can be stressful if you don’t know its fair-market value or you need to make repairs to it first. Selling a broken down car to a scrap yard can be difficult too. The cost of towing it to the yard may not balance out the payment you’ll get from selling it for scrap metal.
With all that in mind, it’s good to know that there is an easier alternative to all the stress of haggling with buyers on the price, towing the car yourself, or worrying that a dealer isn’t giving you a fair price.
For many Americans, Memorial Day is best remembered as the first day of summer. But it’s important to take a moment this day to reflect on, remember, and honor the men and women who have given their lives serving this country. Whereas Veterans Day, celebrated in November, is meant to focus on honoring the veterans of wars, Memorial Day is a more somber day because it focuses on honoring those who have lost their lives. The real meaning of Memorial Day can be a difficult topic to discuss with your children, but without an understanding of the day’s significance, it’s possible that it will be forgotten. Memorial Day weekend is, of course, a wonderful time to spend an extra day or two of vacation with family, celebrating time spent together. There are many simple, engaging, and fun ways to still spend that time together as a family while also honoring fallen military members in the true spirit of the holiday.
Emergency Medical Services for Children Day takes place on the Wednesday of each EMS Week. This year, May 21 is the day where medical personnel, communities, and parents work together to raise awareness about specialized pediatric emergency care. This day is a special recognition of the aspects of EMS that are unique to children. While many medical institutions, schools and health organizations will host their own events for EMSC Day, there are a few things you and your kids can do at home to address the topic of EMS for kids.
May 18-24 marks the 40th annual Emergency Medical Services Week. President Gerald Ford authorized the first EMS Week celebration in 1973 shortly after Congress passed the Emergency Medical Services Act. Since the first celebration, the week has focused on recognizing and honoring EMS practitioners as well as spreading awareness about injury prevention. EMS Week is the perfect time to teach your kids about safety and to show thanks to the EMS personnel who are dedicated to serving your community.
Spring is in full swing, and the next few weeks are a perfect time to get outside and enjoy the season. It’s also the perfect time to care for and beautify the land we love so much by cleaning up rivers, parks and other natural areas. Since the beginning of spring, various organizations and cities have been hosting clean up events, recycling programs and clean sweeps. And even though Earth Day was back in April, you can still help the planet every day by keeping it clean. Below we’ve listed a few upcoming June events around the nation that promote a green lifestyle. If you don’t see one in your city, chances are someone in your area is still hosting a local clean up or recycling event.
It’s that time of the year when sun protection is crucial, and frequent reminders must be made to cover up the skin, wear sunscreen, and get screened when any suspicious mark or mole appears somewhere new. Since skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, it is important to remember that May is National Melanoma and Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month. The best way to spread the word is by keeping yourself safe and setting a good example! Whether you live in San Francisco, Honolulu, Anchorage, or Syracuse, practicing safe sun is a must.
Few things are more thrilling than rappelling down 38 stories of the One America Center in the heart of downtown Austin. One thing that comes to mind, though, is scaling that height for a good cause: raising money for our partner Make-A-Wish® Central and South Texas. Last year, that chapter of Make-A-Wish granted 218 wishes to deserving children; registering now to be a fundraiser for their Over the Edge event will help them in their goal of granting even more wishes this year. All the money raised by Make-A-Wish rappellers goes towards granting the wishes of these local children.
The beauty of spring is that it’s a great opportunity to get out and enjoy an afternoon on the links. But what if you could not only get out and golf, but also support Make-A-Wish Central New York? If that’s up your alley, than there are two great opportunities in June for you to do that.
There are two Golf For Wishes events: The first chance is at the 27th Annual Onondaga Beverage Corporation Make-A-Wish Open in Syracuse on June 2, with the next opportunity the following week, June 9, at the 16th Annual Nelcorp Make-A-Wish Open in Johnson City.
Together, the two events play an important role in raising funds for Make-A-Wish Central New York. Your participation ensures that children with critical illnesses across Central New York will continue to receive their desired wishes.
Nurses are very important to us, but they are especially important to all of the Make-A-Wish Wish Kids who are battling critical illnesses. Nurses brighten the lives of their child patients and do so much for everyone, so it makes total sense that we would set aside a specific day to honor them for all their endless hard work!
Tuesday, May 6 is National Nurse’s Day, otherwise known as National RN Recognition Day. The day opens National Nurses Week which runs through May 12. The week-long celebration was started in honor of English nurse Florence Nightingale, who was born on May 12.
Look back on your life and remember the days of being a child and a teenager. Now put yourself in the shoes of a child battling a critical illness, such as neurofibromatosis or a brain tumor. Brain tumors are most common in children under the age of 20, males up to the age of 39, and females under the age of 20. Neurofibromatosis is usually diagnosed in childhood or early adulthood. This puts many children and young adults at risk. This is why it is so important to spread awareness during the month of May during National Brain Tumor and Neurofibromatosis Month. Start by remembering to wear a gray ribbon, which signifies brain tumors.
